Class review: FLY x Liz Earle, Slow Flow

Escape to the country at this cinematic class
Fly LDN
29 April 2019

Where and when

FLY LDN’s yoga studio in the City, on Wednesday at 5.45pm and once a day for two weeks at various times.

What’s the drill

A 45-minute immersive slow-flow class in a soothingly dark studio space, during which you perform sun salutations in front of a floor-to-ceiling HD screen filled with cinematic scenes of nature, from snow-covered mountains to daisy-sprinkled meadows. The studio’s two-week collaboration with Liz Earle focuses on coastal scenery of the brand’s Isle of Wight home and includes a muscle-melting shoulder massage using its replenishing body balm while you do savasana.

The skinny

As well as encouraging you to focus on your inner relaxation rather than everyone else in the class, the session combines mellow, restorative Vinyasa sequences with an uplifting playlist and welcomes all ages and abilities. Expect deep holds to release built-up tension.

Sweat count

Things will definitely warm up, but this class is more about controlling your breathing than making you out of breath.

The social network

Located just off Leadenhall Street in the shadow of The Gherkin, FLY is perfectly positioned to help stressed-out suits find calm in the City.

Instructor appeal

The studio’s head of yoga, Fi, offered clear, easy-to-follow instructions — ideal for those like me who aren’t fluent in Sanskrit. She also took time to adjust and coach each person in the class individually and without judgment.

What to pack

Just your leggings and crop top — mats, bolsters, blocks and straps are all provided.

The sounds

Carefully curated cool ambient melodies that are more inspiring than annoying.

Locker-room chat

The attractive changing room is generous in both space and stuff, with showers, Cloud Nine hairdryers and straighteners, fluffy towels and keycode lockers. You’ll also get a free full-size Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic spritzer for post-class refreshment. Plus, there’s a café dishing up breakfast smoothies and Monmouth coffee.

Tips for first-timers

Ideal for novices, as everyone else is too focused on the lapping waves to notice your wonky warrior pose.

The afterburn

Expect loosened limbs and softer shoulders alongside a post-yoga afterglow that lasts long into the evening.

From £20 per class. 24 Creechurch Lane, EC3; flyldn.co.uk
