A beauty queen who suffers from acne has revealed the surprising dietary tip that cleared her complexion.

Rachel Crawley, 22, has told how she was bullied for her severe skin condition, which left her too insecure to take part in a pageant at the age of 18 - despite being approached by organisers to participate.

But turning to veganism, she says, has banished the extreme acne which left her embarrassed to leave the house.

Crawley set up an Instagram account to bravely share her battle with her skin, telling her 13,000 followers that eliminating refined sugar and simple carbs, and eventually adopting a plant-based diet, has helped her skin and confidence immensely.

“I do believe in a plant based diet it has helped my chronic problems, mental health and acne!,” she says in an Instagram post.

“The best decision I ever made was taking that final step and going vegan. Not only for my health, but for the animals, and our planet.”

Posting several brave makeup-free selfies on her Instagram page, Crawley documented her skin journey on the app - noting that after just a few days of cutting out sugar, carbs and animal products, her skin began to improve.

“Only for about 3 days I have stopped eating these foods and upped my fat intake (healthy fats) and guess what? No new breakouts!” she writes.

“No Medication. High fat vegan plant based diet (nothing processed). Real whole foods, natural minimal skin care routine.”

As well as a healthy diet, the Instagrammer says ditching her beauty stash helped with the healing process of her skin.

After discovering the wonders that changing her diet could do for her skin, she decided to apply the same theory to her skin, switching to organic skincare products and going make-up free on most days.

“Whilst I've always researched into eating healthy I never realised the importance of what was in the products I was putting on my skin,” she says.

“I got rid of all my old makeup mac, Chanel, Estée Lauder ect! As they are filled with harsh chemicals that our skin absorb.

“I did the same with my skin care and switched over to natural products.

“This hand in hand with my diet (lifestyle choice) has helped my skin massively.”

Now that she’s feeling more confident than ever, Crawley has decided to compete as a finalist in the Miss Preston 2017 pageant.
