Caviar to Kobe beef: a first look inside Harrods' new fresh food market

From a vegetable butchery to the largest oyster selection in the UK, Lizzie Edmonds goes inside Harrods' newly refurbished Fresh Market Hall

A market hall dedicated entirely to fresh goods has been unveiled today at Harrods as part of the department store’s refurbishment of its food halls.

The Fresh Market Hall includes a deli section, which offers meals such as beef Wellington, salmon en croute and truffle macaroni and cheese, prepared by the store’s 150 in-house chefs.

There is also the rotisserie, where customers can buy chicken and other meats, and the fruit and vegetable section, which includes a “Vegetable Butchery” for customers to choose how their goods are chopped, mixed and prepared.

The fish counter has offerings such as Faroe Island salmon, caviar and Canadian lobster, as well as oysters from what is thought to be the largest selection in the UK.

Meats and cuts such as Kobe and wagyu beef, Pyrenean lamb and Iberian pork will also be on offer in the butchery. There is also a charcuterie counter.

The area is the second stage in a two-year refurbishment of the department store’s food halls, following the launch of the Roastery & Bake Hall in November last year.

It has been designed by David Collins Design Studio, who also worked on Michelin-star chef Tom Kerridge’s recently-opened debut restaurant, Kerridge’s Bar and Grill at the Corinthia Hotel.

Harrods executive head chef, Andy Cook, added: “Opening the Fresh Market Hall will allow us to bring my team of 150 in-house chefs to the forefront, servicing our foodie customers directly and introducing the chefs’ brand new creations to the Harrods Deli counter. I can’t wait for customers to taste the new dishes.”

Chris Dee, Director of Food and Home, said: “The investment in our historic Food Halls is a celebration of our heritage. Harrods began as a grocer, and food has always been at the heart of the business. Harrods continually strives to provide the best products, experiences and services in every category. The Fresh Market Hall is very special to us as it takes inspiration not only from the store’s history, but also from the incredibly exciting and dynamic food scene developing across the capital.”

Harrods was first opened in 1834 as a wholesale grocer and tea merchant in east London.
