Victoria's Secret model Jessica Hart reveals her 'lonely' London life

Model Jessica Hart has spoken about the “sad, lonely period” she spent in London as a teenager.

Hart moved to the capital from Australia at the age of 16 to pursue her catwalk dream. It paid off - she is now a Victoria’s Secret model who has appeared in American Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

But Hart, now 30, said she struggled to cope with being so far from home. “It was a real sad, lonely period,” she said.

“I was so miserable living in London the first time around. I just remember being broke, renting a room in this old house in Fulham, with a communal bathroom, and it was all so grey. I was making just enough to keep going and counting the days before I could go back to Australia.”

The model made the comments in an interview with Hello! Fashion Monthly.

Hart, who now lives in New York with her boyfriend, the billionaire Stavros Niarchos III, was discovered in a shopping centre modelling competition as a rebellious 13-year-old tomboy.

“The idea of being girly and pretty was not on the top of my list,” she said. “My fashion consisted of matching tracksuits. I was a tomboy, into Snoop Dogg.”

She added: “At the age of 14, even younger, I was a loose cannon. I gave my mum hell. I’d run away and steal her car - I wouldn’t be willing to admit half of the things I did.”

Her modelling career helped put her on the straight and narrow: “It got me out of school (modelling) and I liked the money I was making. Mom was always broke, working, like, two jobs to keep us, and all of a sudden I had access to money.”
