Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has been nominated for the British Fashion Council’s prestigious womenswear designer of the year award - a title previously held by John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

The shortlist sees Beckham, 41, nominated for the prize alongside critically acclaimed designers Christopher Kane and Jonathan Anderson whose shows are the most anticipated on the London Fashion Week schedule.

Beckham, who turned her hand to designing less than a decade ago, also follows in the footsteps of revered Céline designer Phoebe Philo who took home the award in 2010.

Her inclusion on the list of nominees, chosen by a judging panel of over 800 key fashion industry figures, serves as a major achievement for the Essex born businesswoman who has fought hard to win the respect of fashion’s hard core design elite.

Since launching her eponymous label in 2008 with a collection of simple sheath dresses, Beckham has grown a significant fashion business which has an annual turnover of £30 million.

The designer, who opened her first store on Dover Street last year and has previously been awarded with the British Fashion Council’s brand of the year prize, continues to impress critics with high quality collections which marry her own signature style with high quality design.

Beckham, who is expected to attend the star studded awards ceremony on November 23rd, receives this recognition from the industry alongside some of British design’s most accomplished names.

Among them are rising stars Molly Goddard and Thomas Tait, up for the emerging womenswear designer award, and menswear designer Patrick Grant. A host of established British brands including Burberry, Anya Hindmarch and Erdem are among the big names in with a chance of picking up a gong.

Barking born model Malaika Firth, who shot to fame in 2013 when she became the first black model to star in a Prada campaign in over ten years, is up for the model of the year award alongside fellow Londoners Georgia May Jagger and Jourdan Dunn.

The British Fashion Awards, previously a low budget affair, have been transformed in the care of NET-A-PORTER founder Natalie Massenet who took up the role of British Fashion Council chair in 2012.

Now a unmissable occasion on the fashion calendar for industry players and celebrities from across the globe, the event is attended by over 2000 guests and counts Anna Wintour, Kate Moss and Samantha Cameron among its regular attendees.

Massenet, who will complete her tenure at the British Fashion Council following London Fashion Week next February, counts the increased success of British fashion on a global level as the secret to the award’s transformation. “The awards recognise the incredible talent we are so fortunate to work with and celebrates the excellence and creativity within our industry both at home and abroad” she said, “it is the fashion night of the year”.
