Versace goes street style and does it for the rock chick

21 September 2013

One is the queen of unconventional elegance while the other considers the notion of subtlety an alien concept and yet Miuccia Prada and Donatella Versace seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet in Milan this week.

Just 24 hours after Mrs Prada unveiled her streetstyle-inspired collection for next summer, Versace's followed with her own take on the aesthetic.

Granted, the outcomes are entirely different. If Prada's heroine is an unconventional fashion lover with an appreciation for Mexican street art, Versace's is a rock chick with a thing for Guns 'n' Roses.

"The street is the new catwalk," said Versace at a press conference yesterday. "Things change so fast, Iwanted to bring that out with this collection."

Nods to streetwear run through Versace's offering for next season, with each element reinterpreted for the high-paying luxury consumer.

Denim and leather jackets are lent details through the house's signature hook-and-eye fastenings, while jersey bras and cutaway skirts were crafted in silk. T-shirts emblazoned with the words Versace World Tour 2014, and inspired by one Versace spotted on guitarist Axel Rose, are among the designer's favourite pieces.

A mesh metal neck detail, used on tops and dresses, also echoes the bandanas made famous by Rose. The collection, which oozes with gritty attitude, also includes The Palazzo, a part-tote, part-clutch bag which looks certain to go down a storm with the most affluent of rock chicks when it lands next year.
