London might be the epicentre of British menswear but it was the North of England that fell into the spotlight as Topman opened the four-day fashion showcase.

Taking the bomber jackets and wide-leg trousers that once served as a uniform for revellers on Wigan Pier and updating them for the 21st century, the high-street chain unveiled its latest spring/summer Design collection.

A vest printed with the slogan, "dance like you're northern" served to underpin a collection in which Topman sought to celebrate British subcultures.

Long sleeve cycling tops which came with turtlenecks and printed patchwork protest slogans referencing the miners strikes, firmly rooted this showcase in the 1980s.

There was a nod to rave culture and the hedonistic days of acid house on offer too.

Block coloured anoraks, presented along side thigh-high running shorts, looked better suited to a field in Spike Island than to the glossy LCM catwalk while a series of skater shoes in ruby red and cobalt blue are sure to appeal to ageing Stone Roses fans.

Unveiled to the sounds of Eighties house music, the show looked certain to delight Topman's music-obsessed shopper but there was much on offer for the adventurous fashion consumer too.

Pyjama-stripe trouser suits and nearly fitted satin bombers were among the most covetable pieces on display.

Other designers to show their wares in the capital today include rising stars Craig Green and Christopher Shannon.

The four day showcase was launched by LCM chair Dylan Jones who began the event with a motivational speech in which he proudly announced that British menswear continues to out-perform womenswear.
