Best for Variety

Gap

What it offers: An enormous range of styles and designs in a host of vibrant colours from a reasonable £70.

Greatest asset: Whether you’re a man, a woman or a two-week-old, you’ll find the perfect cashmere piece in Gap.

Other nominees: Uniqlo — the only store on the high street giving Gap’s selection a run for its money.

Touch Test: The only sweater within our audit that looks as good as it feels.

Give it to … your best friend.

Best for Texture

Uniqlo

What it offers: Subtle neutrals and daring brights in a host of styles and shapes from £79.

Greatest asset: Aside from the wealth of choice available, Uniqlo came out top of our list for super softness.

Other nominees: Gap and M&S.

Touch Test: While this is a lightweight cashmere it is almost like silk to touch.

Give it to…. a stylish someone.

Best For Mucky Pups

F&F from Tesco

What it offers: A collection of V-neck sweaters and crew cardis available in pastel shades for £45 or less.

Greatest asset: These jumpers look just as good following a 30- or even a 40-degree wash.

Other nominees: M&S.

Touch Test: Great value for money, F&F offers a tactile sweater which, while a little on the thin side, feels gentle on the skin.

Give it to … your secret Santa.

Best for warmth

M&S

What it offers: A huge range of sweaters, cardis and loungewear in a dynamic range of colours.

Greatest asset: This cashmere is seriously cosy. Avoid on balmy days.

Other nominees: Gap and Cos which both offer an extra chunky option.

Touch Test: As well as looking delicious from a distance, the M&S offering is silky soft.

Give it to … your mum.

Best Entry Level

H&M

What it offers: A limited range of round-neck sweaters for £50 and under.

Greatest asset: The Swedish chain offers a low-priced range in stylish, youthful shapes that are perfect for cashmere virgins.

Other nominees: F&F.

Touch Test: A little rough around the edges. Could be thicker — don’t wear one up Everest.

Give it to … your little sister.
