The red carpet at the opening of an exhibition entitled Punk: Chaos to Couture was never going to be boring. Shocking? Yes. Confusing? Maybe. But never boring.

The veteran punks in attendance at the Metropolitan Museum in New York last night were the most memorable of the guests. The inimitable Vivienne Westwood – a vision in a pale pink kimono and grey ruched waist dress from her own label – lead the charge.

And rightly so, the British designer is the godmother of the era this whole evening was devised to celebrate. She was flanked by model Lily Cole, who had ditched her signature elfin ensembles for something more rebellious - designed by Westwood, of course.

Fellow Seventies idol Debbie Harry looked equally at home. Taking to the stage to sing a couple of the songs which made her - along with her band Blondie - a household name, the sixty-seven-year old proved she can still cut it in fish-net trimmed black dress with a satin blazer and zip-front boots for glorious effect.

Madonna went all guns blazing to celebrate the era in fish-net stockings with a studded tartan Givenchy blazer and lilac suede shoes by Casadei. Stopping short at shaving her hair into a Mohican, the Material Girl finished off her look with a sleek black bob.
