Naomi, Cindy, Claudia, Helena. The original supermodels; the first to be so famous that they didn't require a surname.

And to squeals of delight from senior fashion editors and directors on the front row at Versace this evening in Milan - who were literally crouching on the floor to get the perfect Instagram video - these four women sauntered down the catwalk with Donatella herself and Carla Bruni for the joyous show finale.

Dressed in shimmering gold gowns split to the thigh, they all looked impossibly fantastic.

The soundtrack? Perhaps the most appropriate song imaginable: George Michael’s Freedom.

Tonight's collection was a celebration of Gianni Versace's life to mark the 20 year anniversary of his death.

A spoken word soundtrack included quotes from his sister, now an icon in her own right, such as the opening lines “This is a celebration of a genius. This is a celebration of an icon. This is a celebration of my brother.”

Accordingly, Donatella Versace looked into the house’s archives and used twelve flamboyant prints from the golden years of 1991-1995, though the silhouettes were reimagined to have a more contemporary silhouette.

That said, there were plenty of Nineties references in the form of leather trouser suits, leopard prints, jewelled jackets and a lot of pairs of leggings.

During the main show, models took to the catwalk in pairs, threes and even fours for maximum impact.

The supermodels of the moment we're not left out either, and included Kendall Jenner, Bella and Gigi Hadid, as well as Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber.

The 16 year-old has been enjoying success during her first catwalk season in New York, London and now Milan, though no-one could have predicted she'd be walking in the same show as her mum in an incredible show that was a real pinch-me moment for anyone in the audience.

The fashion world is still buzzing from the experience.
