From the outside Scarlett Johansson's choice of Met Gala gown looked perfect.

Eschewing the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" theme and steering clear of any religious symbols that could cause controversy, the actress opted for a elegant gown, which boasted a simple bardot silhouette, gradient tulle running from a deep burgundy to pastel pink, finished off with subtle floral detail.

Dig a little deeper, though, and it is arguably the most controversial look on the Met Gala 2018 red carpet, surpassing even Rihanna's pope-inspired ensemble.

The gown was designed by Marchesa, a brand owned by Harvey Weinstein's soon-to-be ex-wife, Georgina Chapman.

Hollywood producer Weinstein is currently under investigation for over 60 sexual assault allegations, which have come to light since last year.

The revelation left Hollywood and the world shocked, and in recent months has sparked the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, as well as many political statements on the red carpet, such as a sartorial black-out at the Golden Globes 2018 in show of solidarity.

Since the news about Weinstein broke, A-listers have boycotted his wife's brand, which was once a firm favourite with the celeb set.

The British designer, who founded the brand in 2004, also cancelled her New York Fashion Week show back in February, instead choosing a digital presentation.

Johansson's choice of designer for Monday night's Met Gala indeed seems an odd one, the actress herself is a keen advocate of the Time's Up movement, and considering Weinstein used to allegedly force actresses working on his films to wear his estranged wife's designs on the red carpet, we are sure her choice couldn't have gone down too well with other attendees.

That said, many on Twitter have applauded Johansson's choice, saying Georgina Chapman's brand doesn't deserve to be ruined due to her ex-husband's actions.
