The demure black Chanel gown she wore to the Met Gala last week might have been on the safe side, but the look Margot Robbie chose to rock at last night’s Chanel Cruise show in LA was anything but.

The Chanel ambassador made a serious entrance at the event sporting Chanel bell bottom jeans, a black bikini top and a twinkling chainmail bolero. Attending the event with her husband Tom Ackerley, the Barbie movie star wore her blonde tresses loose and wavy and carried a quilted black Chanel handbag.

Newlywed Sofia Richie also made an appearance, with her new husband Elliot Grainge in tow. Richie, who wore three custom Chanel dresses to her wedding in the South of France last month, looked super sweet in a white boucle Chanel suit with pale pink marabou feather trim paired with neon pink Chanel logo earrings and monochrome vintage-style Chanel sandals.

Elle Fanning looked cool in a beaded black and silver Chanel trouser set with waistcoat top.

The LA show marked the second outside of France since Virginie Viard took the helm as creative director in 2019, and was designed in part as a celebration of the mega new flagship the brand opened in Beverly Hills last week.

The Rodeo Drive store, which spans over 30,000 square feet and four levels, is the largest Chanel boutique in the United States and has taken over a decade to complete.

In a reflection of the sun-soaked and palm tree lined backdrop, Viard’s vision for her jet set cruise customer this season popped with high shine metallics and colour.

Shiny gold bikinis peeked from beneath boucle bustiers, while 1960’s-inspired silky bathrobes and pyjamas sat alongside yacht party-ready rhinestone covered hotpants and jumpsuits. An eighties influence was seen in abstract geometric print crop tops, blouson jackets and legwarmers that had something of the aerobics class uniform about them.

Pops of neon, disco balls, roller-skates and lamé metallics made for a more flamboyant aesthetic than we are used to seeing from Chanel. It was, according to Viard, “a tribute to the glamour of great film stars… evoking the world of fun to be had with aerobics, sports and roller skating.

“The idea is to offer a breath of fresh air, a voyage, a light-hearted and happy fantasy.”
