In what was a telling indication of what is undoubtedly a key money spinner for the house which recently reported a revenue of £2,330 million, Christopher Bailey reimagined a host of classic coats in shearling, felted wool and cashmere.

But this was no walk down memory lane for the designer who has form when it comes to reinterpreting classic Burberry’s signature pieces. "I wanted the collection to feel formal and quite classic but with a strong bohemian spirit" noted Bailey after the show, "I love a contradiction and the idea of something that transports us to somewhere else. It’s about freedom".

And there was a renewed sense of freedom at work within this collection. While Bailey tends to adhere to a tried and tested format when it comes to presenting his visions, the fashion on offer is a moveable feast.

Today the designer took his customers on a journey into a luxurious bohemia. Chesterfield coats, felted ponchos and corduroy suits suggested this was a collection for a man who wants more from his wardrobe than a tired two-piece.

A heady mix of colours, prints and ideas, the offering was an amalgamation of looks and perhaps of cultures too - a notion that was emphasised in the closing moments of the show with the unveiling of a series of mirrored pieces which had a decidedly ethnic influence.

Of course this being Burberry, a brand that considers Britishness as its USP, there were some quintessentially English codes in the mix too. Among them were paisley prints, used to create quilted cotton overcoats, and a host of shearling lined Derby shoes with which Bailey married a contemporary idea with a classic Northamptonshire based tradition.

The show played out to the sounds of singer song writer Claire McGuire, who penned a ballad for especially for the occasion, and was watched by a host of Burberry big names including current campaign star and model Jourdan Dunn. Dunn, who wore a red trench from the brand’s spring/summer collection was joined on the front-row by London Collections: Men ambassador Nicholas Grimshaw.
