London Fashion Week: opulent Tom Ford is worth waiting for

For anyone who didn't get the chance to witness one of Tom Ford's iconic Gucci shows first hand, his showcase in London last night served as a fitting substitute. This was classic Ford glamour remixed for 2013.

Staged in the opulent centre of Lancaster House, guests including Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel and Anna Wintour took their seats in a mirror-lined ballroom. Champagne and gin and tonic, served by male models moonlighting as waiters, ensured no one went thirsty while waiting for the show to start.

When it eventually did - it wouldn't be a fashion event if it started on time - Ford proved that this, his first womenswear catwalk show, was worth waiting for.

A stampede of the world's most famous models including Anja Rubik, Arizona Muse and Jourdan Dunn opened the show.

Showcasing his daywear offering, if you dare call a pair of thigh-high beaded boots such a thing, Ford unveiled luxuriously fringed kaftans and patchwork mink overcoats.

But it was his eveningwear suggestions that provided the glittering injection of glamour the entire room was waiting for. This was unapologetic, pre-recession fabulousness which oozed sultry appeal.

Borrowing from Lichtenstein, Ford unveiled sweeping floor-length gowns detailed with "kapow" prints and a moody colour pallette punched with coral and amethyst.
