For a winter look with star quality take your lead from Ziggy Stardust and step out in silver boots this season

We lost one of our brightest stars at the start of 2016, but we haven’t seen the last of David Bowie.

Lazarus has taken the box office by storm; Blackstar, is playing on repeat on Spotify accounts across the capital, and the Starman’s presence can still be felt in fashion, too.

There’s little doubt that Bowie was a man of many truly exceptional outfits.

And while we’re yet to welcome the return of a star-spangled Lurex catsuit back into popular favour - though we’re watching the rails of Zara in anticipation - there is one ubiquitous must-have for autumn that would definitely have Ziggy Stardust’s seal of approval: silver boots.

If you’re still contemplating autumn’s new boot purchase, our advice is to make them metallic. You won’t regret it. Or, for that matter, spare a second thought for your boring old black pair.

I speak as a recently converted adopter of this trend - my current obsession is the Silver Lining boots by London’s latest footwear It-girl Camilla Elphick, which have barely been off my feet during the past two months.

It seems I’m in good company. Alexa Chung is also a fan of Elphick’s work, which is easily identified by the gold arrow at the heel, while Laura Bailey favours Saint Laurent’s platforms and Rihanna - never one to be outshone - prefers Balenciaga’s mirror-shine knee-highs.

What’s great about a pair of silver boots - apart from the fact that they’re a small way to make a big statement and are a guaranteed compliment-collector - is that they go with absolutely everything.

Not only are silver shoes a no-brainer choice for those tricky transitional months when it’s too cold for Converse but not cold enough for snow boots, they also provide the perfect pairing to two items currently accounting for 90 per cent of Londoners’ uniforms this season: a long-sleeve floral midi dress and a pair of straight-fit cropped jeans coupled with a nice neutral knit. And just imagine how invaluable these bad boys will be come festive party season. Truly, if you can’t wear a silver boot and shimmy around your living room to Let’s Dance at Christmas, when can you?

Further proof that these boots are no one-hit wonder is the breadth of styles on offer at the moment - almost every shop on the high street has its own version in stock.

Platform ankle boots, £79, Topshop

Topshop has a very Saint Laurent-esque pair of platform pumps, while Zara has gone down the Vetements glitter sock-boot route - a steal at just £40.

What’s most reassuring is that, thanks to the fact that its stand-out appeal is all in the colour, the shape du jour is very London-friendly, riding high on the ankle and low on the heel.

Leather silver boots, £125, & Other Stories

& Other Stories’ leather silver boots, for example, with their sensible three-inch heels and bouncy cushioned insoles, are definitely on the right track to becoming one of our heroes.
