Five gold rings: it’s time to hang the decorations... on your ears

This year, if you’re in the loop, you’ll be wearing hoops
Cheers, ears: Lazy hoop earrings, £35, (lazyoaf.com) and diamond hoops, £260, Bjørg (parlaonline.com)

Just as everyone knows that the best part of the Christmas cake is the thin layer of marzipan that sits comfortably between the icing and the fruit, and that the ubiquitous glittering baubles that hang on your £50 Christmas tree are its trump card, a pair of perfectly poised gold hoop earrings are the crowning glory of your festive ensemble.

They are the historically unsung heroes of the party wardrobe. But unlike big old bobby dazzlers and glitzy chandeliers, a well-placed hoop doesn’t compete for attention with your red sequined party frock (or whatever festive finery floats your boat) but rather offers just the right amount of pizazz.

Just ask their biggest fan, über-stylist Victoria Young, who has designed a collection for online jewellery boutique MYFLASHTRASH. After a chance conversation with its founder Amber Atherton on a LOVE magazine shoot, the idea for the collaboration was hatched after Young — an avid hoop advocate since her school days — told of her frustration at not being able to find the perfect pair for a shoot she was styling. Six months later, the 10-piece range was born and features her dream hoop wardrobe, from big ones to small ones and everything in between.

Hoops: from £15, Victoria Young for MYFLASHTRASH (myflashtrash.com)

If that still isn’t enough choice, may we suggest you head to Fenwick Bond Street, which has just introduced a new Hoop Station from London jewellery label Georgiana Scott (or, as she is known to her fans, the Queen of Hoops). Scott’s offering is second to none. With teeny sleepers through to shoulder-skimming gypsy hoops in gold, silver and rose gold there’s something to suit every taste — and, with prices from £20 to £650, every budget too.

Textured hoops: £75 each, Georgiana Scott (available at Fenwick Bond Street)

If you like your hoops old school, tongue-in-cheek East End label Lazy Oaf has a range of slogan styles and ones shaped like teddy bears.

Spine earrings, £185, Rachel Boston (rachelboston.co.uk)

For edgier tastes, try the spine hoops from London-based designer Rachel Boston, while puritans will find a host of minimalist styles at Boxpark’s boutique Pärla which boasts a range of covetable British and Scandinavian brands. The diamond hoops from Norwegian designer Bjørg are proving a popular choice this Christmas.

Santa, take note.
