5 key items to invest in for summer

In case you're pondering an isolation pick-me-up...
Chloe Street24 April 2020

With holidays cancelled and plans in limbo, summer wardrobe shopping has understandably taken a back seat.

But as the April mercury rises to June-ready temperatures, many of us are beginning to crave floatier fabrics and skimpier hemlines.

For those of you who have replaced IRL shopping with a serious online perusing habit, we spoke to Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net-a-Porter’s Global Buying Director, to get her thoughts on the failsafe items to invest in for summer 2020…

Because who said we couldn’t make the daily stroll stylish as hell?

1. The short suit

Suits you: add a short suit to your basket for WFH chic

"Short suits are a must have item for summer, and they are a great investment too. I love the ones from Frankie Shop, Staud and Gauchére as they are structured and timeless, and they can easily be worn separately too."

2. The oversized shirt

Supersized shirting: how will you style yours?

"An oversized men’s shirt is a great classic shape that’s great in warm weather as it’s super breathable. I loved the men’s shirts at The Row, for Spring/Summer 2020, in a traditional blue, as well as the classic white ones from Emma Wills and King and Tuckfield."

3. The mini dress

A mini dress is a no-brainer for SS20

"A great mini dress is a must have item in everyone’s summer wardrobe, so much so that at, NET-A-PORTER, we bought over 300 styles for Spring/Summer 2020, including the three little black dresses that opened this season’s Versace show."

4. The baguette bag

Bag yourself a baguette

"Baguette bags are not new news, but we did see them become the most dominating bag trend of this past season and they will keep being a key trend for Spring/Summer 2020 too. Some brands took the trend more literarily, such as By Far’s ‘Rachel’ bag, whereas others, like Bottega Veneta, took the shape and updated it in a modern way – with a chunky chain strap."

5. Thong sandals

Pedi ready: thong sandals are a key shape for summer

"Last but not least, the thong sandal will be a key item for the season ahead, as it’s an easy way to tap into the 1990s trend and it’s a natural move on from the naked sandal, which we have seen dominate for so many seasons now. Gianvito Rossi and Wandler have some great wearable styles."
