Face of the week: Britney Spears

Anyone for polo? Britney’s attempt to team a staid top with pyjama-print shorts and stilettos doesn’t quite gel

When it comes to crowd-pleasing, you can't fault Britney. Her recent choice of "outfit" for a recent trip to a Neasden McDonald's had something to please everyone — if only she hadn't put it all together.

Set free from the leash of her tour stylist, Britney went into trend overload with enough references to send a fashion journalist into orbit.

What with hotpants being something of a trademark of hers, she did well with a pyjama-print pair that were (almost) part Dolce & Gabbana SS09, part laid-back beach babe.

These went nicely with the 1970s bug-eyed sunnies and the bedhead hair.

This she teamed with a pair of nude-ish stilettos which — given the slippery surface of the average McDonald's floor — hinted at sartorial error.

Still, nude shoes are supposed to elongate a bare leg, so you can see her reasoning.

Brit has also come a long way since the abs-flashing days of Baby One More Time: she knows that cleavage and legs are a no-no for a day trip.

And that's where things started to slide. With her polo neck creating a sizeable "boob shelf", she mixed the LA beach babe look with the wardrobe staple of a WI member. Even by fashion standards, that's a clash too far.

Confused about herself, confused about her style, Britney's ensemble lays bare the inner workings of the Spears mind.

Still, you've got to love a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve — even if it is a white polo neck.
