It’s officially engagement season.

"Each year, searches for engagement ideas increase on Pinterest an average of 40 per cent from June to January,” a spokesperson for Pinterest tells the Standard.

And 40 per cent of people choose to pop the question sometime between Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

Actress Emma Stone and her beau Dave McCary got ahead of the curve, announcing their engagement on Wednesday.

The Saturday Night Live director and writer shared a sweet photo on Instagram, in which Stone revealed her beautiful engagement ring.

While it’s not easy to make out from the blurry image, it looks as though Stone’s ring has a pearly stone at the middle, surrounded by diamonds and set on a gold band. Stone herself is yet to reveal any images of the ring, but from what we can tell, it looks like an antique piece of jewellery.

Antique and pre-owned rings are set to be one of the major engagement ring trends of 2020, as couples become more mindful about the environmental impact of their weddings.

“When it comes to diamonds, we are seeing socially conscious attitudes influencing buying behaviour,” says Andrew Brown, diamond expert and CEO of WP Diamonds. “With this in mind, we expect to see an increase in consumers purchasing pre-owned diamonds and recycled jewellery in 2020.

“Buying pre-owned from a certified jeweller is the most eco-friendly and affordable way to buy an engagement ring. It reduces the demand for new jewellery and mining, which in turn reduces the damage that this causes to our planet. Kate Middleton wears possibly the most famous pre-owned engagement ring in the world – an incredible 12-carat sapphire once worn by Princess Diana.”

Not only is vintage bling more ethical, but rings that have been passed down from generation to generation and really stood the test of time have often done so for a reason – because they’re beautiful.
