Check out the return of the lumberjack shirt

Dressing like boys has become quite a thing this past year. If we aren't slopping about in baggy, rolled-up chinos, we're scuffing around in loafers and brogues, and now, to top it all off, we've even stolen the shirts from the backs of

Yes lads, if your wardrobe looks distinctly threadbare, it may be that there's a sticky-fingered female about. The classic check shirt, or lumberjack as it's affectionately known, is now a wardrobe staple for fashion-forward girls looking for a quirky cover-up — the slouchier the better. A perfect partner to jeans, cut-off shorts, leggings and even over dresses, its versatility goes on and on.

You needn't strip your boyfriend of his (unless you want to). The high street has lots of plaid shirts to satisfy check cravings. Don't just stick to the girls' departments: head to the boys' section for cool, oversized shirts which look great worn loose and undone — a sort of jacket alternative — or done up, belted or even knotted for a sexier twist to accentuate waists.
Colours have stepped up a gear, too. Traditional red, white and blues face stiff competition from fun berry, yellow, turquoise, jade, coral, grey and even pink tones. So if Christmas tartans aren't your thing, you can colour up your checks instead.

Urban Outfitters' oversize check flannel shirt in vibrant turquoise and red will look great cinched with a belt (£38). Over at Topshop the autumn's obsession with all things plum is already in evidence with the purple and navy long-sleeve shirt (£28) — sure to win new season style stripes. Roll sleeves up if the weather heats up, or leave them long for autumn chills. Or make a diversion to Topman, where you can find even more styles. We love the green and black check (£28) and the flamingo check (£39).

For a retro edge, treat your boyfriend (and yourself) to a shirt from Aertex. The brushed cotton styles are super-soft. Our fave colourway is the classic red and grey (£50, aertex.com). Channelling your inner tomboy has never been
more fun.
