Alexa Chung launches sleepwear you'll want to wear all day

They're the cats pyjamas

My criteria for purchasing a pair of pyjamas is no longer limited to how cosy it'll be between the sheets.

Nowadays, with nightwear-as-daywear firmly established as a fast track to sartorial sass, I’m looking for that silky cami or cotton shirtdress to work so much harder in my wardrobe.

I want PJs so ridiculously cool I could (could) walk straight out of bed and into a drinks party and still look the cats.

Which is why I was delighted to discover Alexa Chung, queen of said sartorial nonchalance, had added a range of sleepwear to her ALEXACHUNG clothing line.

AC Sleep, which goes on sale today, is a collection too good to remain in the confines of a bedroom. AC Sleep is up for so much more than that.

There are buttercup yellow and pale blue poplin pyjama shirts that would look great with wide-leg white jeans for work, and silky camis in paisley and pistachio that are just begging to be tucked into a pair of Levi’s and taken for a night on the tiles – punchier punters might even fancy the paisley playsuit paired with some killer heels.

Come summer, the frilly cotton tank tops will look perfect paired with your denim Bermuda shorts and cotton nightdresses could be given edge with some chunky Birkenstocks.

It’s a hand luggage-friendly approach to dressing that Chung has long been practising herself.

“Pyjamas are the first thing to go in the case - they offer me comfort when I’m away from home and also double up as outfits when the portable wardrobe is limited,” says Chung. “I like to wear grandad style oversized nights shirts on vacation with sandals, silky slip tops with jeans with a heel at night, bloomers with a t-shirt to get coffee and full pyjamas set for bed time or when I’m boarding a plane.”

We caught up with Alexa to ask her a few slumber-based questions

Where’s the strangest place you’ve woken up?

I had a few years when I was travelling and working so much in various different countries back to back, that I genuinely didn’t know where I was or what I was doing when I first woke up every morning. I started to bring pictures and candles with me to try and make a portable home. The strangest place I’ve woken up isn’t for now.

What is your go to sleep position – superman, starfish, foetal?

It’s literally on my front with my head to the side.

Who would you want to read you a bedtime story?

I used to get boyfriends to make up bed time stories for me. I’ve stopped demanding that now.

Are you a sleep walker? If so, where do you go?

Yes. I look for things, or so I’m told. If I bump into someone when I’m sleep walking, I always ask where something is. The ones I’ve been told about are “my art book” - WE DONT KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS - and “Lucinda” (childhood friend). I installed a lock on my door to stop me getting out because in NY I once made it to my lobby in knickers, a packed bag and a leather jacket.

To celebrate the launch, Chung is releasing a series all about slumber called 'Sleep Talking with Alexa Chung.' Episode one, 'Bediquette' starring actress Amber Anderson, can be viewed on Chung's YouTube channel from 5pm today.

AC Sleep starts at £40.00 and is available from today, exclusively at alexachung.com
