Alexa Chung has designed a collection for Barbour — just in time for festival season

Along with satchels, duffel coats and corduroy dungarees, Alexa Chung is at least 90 per cent responsible for putting Barbour jackets on the map of cool.

In a time BC (Before Chung), the practical wax jackets were largely the preserve of farmers, fisherman and the ‘country set.’

Then in 2007, Chung (alongside Lily Allen and Kate Moss) threw a Barbour jacket over denim hot pants and a t-shirt at Glastonbury and suddenly we all wanted in on that waxy goodness.

Since then Barbour jackets have become as integral a part of Chung’s style DNA as peter pan collars, denim hot pants and dungarees.

And now, the 35-year-old presenter-turned-fashion designer has partnered with the British outerwear brand to launch her own Barbour collection.

“Some of my happiest memories have unfolded in a Barbour. The smell of the wax alone makes me feel like I’m home. For me Barbour has been part of my childhood, my coming of age and I am extraordinarily proud that it is now part of my future,” says Chung, who delved into the Barbour archives to find inspiration for the collection.

According to Barbour’s marketing director, Paul Wilkinson, the reworked archival styles combine “Barbour’s classic tradition with the fashion, style and wit of the ALEXACHUNG brand to create a very special collection that is practical, alluring and fun to wear, designed for festivals and a life outdoors.”

The collection includes seven pieces of outerwear, three tote bags and a bucket hat which will first drop in June and then again in August.

Barbour by Alexachung, will land online and in stores including Selfridges and Net-a-porter early in June.
