Emma Corrin makes the case for fashion pants at Venice Film Festival

Underwear as outerwear at a black tie event? Corrin manages to make it look chic, says Hayley Spencer

With many A-list actors on strike, the red carpet at Venice Film Festival threatened to have a serious shortage of show-stopping couture looks. However, with the normal dress code cast aside, it’s giving way to some maverick fashion moments that we’re here for. Step forward Emma Corrin, who said ‘pants’ to the usual gowns and tuxes this weekend at Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales short film event.

Attending alongside actors such as Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sadie Sink, and Sydney Sweeney, Corrin wore a look straight off the Miu Miu autumn/winter runway, consisting of an olive button-up cardigan, matching pants worn over tights in a denier sheer enough to flash their cherub tattoo, and finished with sensible brown brogues. Their cardi was artfully unbuttoned to flash the stockings’ waistband with an air of nonchalance.

The Crown actor is no stranger to subversive fashion looks and, having walked in the Miu Miu autumn/winter show wearing a sequin iteration of the pants with heels, it was only a matter of time before they felt the knit version of the look needed some airtime.

Given the lack of glitz at this year’s Venice festival, the knitted co-ords felt on point. Plus, there’s something decidedly sleek and chic about the silhouette, especially worn with Corrin’s neat crop and minimal accessories from Miu Miu.

It might be the first time we’ve seen panties on the red carpet this season, though you may recall that both Kendall and Kylie Jenner — both fans of causing a stir with their street style — wore versions of the look by Bottega Venetta and Loewe, respectively, late last year. The two designers flew the flag for the look alongside Raf Simons, Victoria Beckham, and Valentino for spring/summer. Then, proving pants and tights were a 2023 mainstay, Maison Margiela and LaQuan Smith joined Miu Miu in presenting them for autumn.

Certainly not office-appropriate attire but, for my party schedule, Corrin has me tempted.

For a more wearable way to do 2023’s take on underwear as outerwear, try adding opaque tights in tribute to Sixties It girl Edie Sedgewick, or top your fashion knickers with a sheer skirt, as per other looks from the latest Miu Miu’s collection. Also see Miu Miu’s 1996 archive show, when Kate Moss wore a high-slit sheer skirt and blue panties with a biker jacket. It still holds up.

If you’re looking for Venice-style inspiration beyond forgoing your trousers, then Sydney Sweeney’s looks are worthy of note. The Euphoria actor did balletcore to perfection at the Miu Miu party, wearing a pleated polka-dot pink midi dress with crystal-embellished neckline and matching strappy sparkling heels.

It was a great night for young Hollywood in the style stakes, as Stranger Things star Sadie Sink looked effortlessly cool in a cutout black mini and pointed cream pumps, with her hair in a swept-back style.

The day before, Sweeney did Old Hollywood glamour for a Giorgio Armani cocktail event, wearing a black halter gown with a red rose corsage at the neckline, finished with an undone updo. It’s probably the nearest to a classic Venice look we’ve seen so far.
