Elton John is an indisputable icon.

Since rising to fame in the 1960s, he has sold 300 million records, raised millions for his charity with Elton John Aids Foundation and won 10 Tony Awards for his work composing Broadway musicals Billy Elliot, Aida and The Lion King.

However, not once in his career spanning six decades did he think that his face would appear on a skateboard.

“It’s so cool. I never thought that would happen,” he says while clutching a deck branded with an image of his infamous blue and white ‘76 Dodgers Stadium look.

“I’m absolutely so thrilled and excited,” he continues in the one-minute teaser video for his upcoming collaboration with streetwear brand Palace, which he posted to his Instagram earlier today.

Yes, you read that right. Two British icons – albeit from different walks of life – are coming together for a 16-piece collection that pays homage to the musician’s best wardrobe moments. Think: tees and sweaters branded with Elton’s crystal embellished baseball costume (the one Harry Styles replicated for his 2018 Halloween costume), close-ups of Elton sporting his signature thick-rimmed glasses with Palace’s logo transposed onto the lenses, and a retro velour tracksuit similar to the retro Gucci numbers the 74-year-old rocker regularly wears.

While the partnership seems slightly random, the irreverent streetwear brand, founded by Lev Tanju in 2009, is actually no stranger to music collaborations. In 2020 it partnered with English rock band Happy Mondays, while in 2021 the brand showed its respects to the late Whitney Houston with a sell-out collaboration dedicated to the singer.

Moreover, outside of the hyped music collaborations, Palace in the last year alone has collaborated with luxury retailers Harrods, photographer Juergen Teller, beer brand Stella Artois and even the NHS.

Considering Elton has been topping the charts, it feels only right that the national treasure would be next to enter the streetwear scene.
