The late Broadway star Nick Cordero was honoured on Sunday night in an online memorial service, months after his passing from coronavirus.

The two hour livestream included performances and tributes from his many co-stars from Waitress, A Bronx Tale, Rock of Ages and more as well as an emotional speech from his widow Amanda Kloots.

Kloots said Cordero would have wanted the “memorial to be a celebration that makes people smile, that makes people sing, that makes people remember his life in a beautiful way.” Saying that the pair lived “such a blessed life”, she continued that she was “so proud of [his] fight [against coronavirus].”

She said, “My husband, he was a dreamer, he was everybody's friend, he was an incredible husband, an amazing father, brother, son, best friend. He just was the kind of guy that everybody liked to have around.”

“The last three months of Nick's life, he truly showed me what a strong person he was. Fighting every single day for his life, for me and for Elvis,” she continued.

Cordero was admitted to the emergency room with coronavirus on March 30 and was hospitalised for nearly three months, over the course of which his leg was amputated due to coronavirus-related issues and he was put into a medically induced coma. The Tony-nominated actor was 41 years old. He and Kloots have a 1 year old son together called Elvis (who Kloots said is the “spitting image” of Cordero).

Following his initial hospitalisation, Kloots took to Instagram to rally fans to dance and pray for the actor’s recovery and shared regular updates about his condition. She revealed he had passed on July 6, writing “God had another angel in heaven now” and said he was with his family “singing and praying as he gently left this earth.”

Reflecting on Cordero’s career and their three year marriage in the memorial service, she revealed Cordero had nearly given up on his career. Kloots said he was taking real estate classes, but everything changed when he landed a role in Bullets Over Broadway in 2014 - which she said “changed his life” and would go on to earn him a Tony nomination.

“When he booked Bullets Over Broadway, I was standing next to him after the reading, and I was in awe of my husband-to-be. He worked so hard at this role and he earned a Tony nomination for it, and it truly did become a show that changed his life,” she said.

“Nick would always say that we were very different, that we shouldn't be together... but I truly believe it was our differences that made us a perfect match,” she said.

My husband, he was a dreamer, he was everybody's friend, he was an incredible husband, an amazing father, brother, son, best friend. He just was the kind of guy that everybody liked to have around...love you so much. Thank you for leaving us with your music,” she said.

Kloots urged those who attended the virtual memorial service to donate to Save the Music on Cordero’s behalf and thanked those who attended on Instagram, saying she was "grateful that Elvis will have this video to watch one day to learn about his father, about how many people loved him and the lives he touched."
