Many around the world know the sound of Grammy-award winning songwriter Katy Perry’s voice - except, perhaps, her fiancee, Orlando Bloom. While Bloom was on BBC Radio 1 to promote his new series Carnival Row, Perry and radio show host Nick Grimshaw pulled a prank on the actor which made for an awkward moment.

During the radio show, Bloom was asked to judge the celebrity impressions of callers. However hidden amongst the callers was Perry, who pretended to be “Gemma, from Hertfordshire”. After Bloom gave someone attempting the Batman villain Bane’s iconic voice a thumbs down and was pleasantly surprised by a spot-on David Attenborough impression, it was then Perry’s turn to shine.

Grimshaw announced that ‘Gemma’ would be on the air next to do a “mean Katy Perry impression”, to which Bloom confidently said, “Well, I’ll be the judge of that.”

Perry then came on the line, attempting initially to sing her iconic song ‘I Kissed A Girl’ with an English accent before sliding back into her American one. Bloom, who looked slightly pained throughout the song, told ‘Gemma’ that she was “great” but continued, “Not convinced, but you know - hard for me because I do live with that voice.”

Literally seconds later, Grimshaw revealed that it was, in fact, Perry on the end of the line and Bloom let out a “doh” that would make Homer Simpson proud. He clarified, “Babes, is that you babes?”

“Honey, I thought you knew me better,” Perry told him, “Do you think we should really be going down this long road if you can’t even tell my own voice?”

Bloom changed tack and began complimenting Perry on how good the prank was, calling her “so clever” before venturing into a pretty domestic conversation about what time she got to sleep the night before.

Perry and Bloom were engaged on Valentine’s Day earlier this year and have been together on and off since 2016. Bloom proposed with a ring set with a centre ruby and haloed with diamonds and the pair shared an identical engagement announcement picture, which also revealed Bloom had filled a room full of heart shaped balloons for the special occasion.

Clearly thrilled about her future with the Lord of the Rings actor, Perry captioned the post, “full bloom.”
