After John Mayer posted a video of himself roundhouse kicking the lid off a water bottle, a new social media trend began to gather pace. While he wasn’t the first to initiate what has now come to be known as the #BottleCapChallenge, he was the first to propel it to crazy new heights as his video has (at the time of writing) had over 4.2 million views.

While Mayer’s video went viral, plenty of other celebrities, athletes and Instagrammers were inspired to try it themselves.

With the likes of Jason Statham, Justin Bieber, Ryan Reynolds, Conor McGregor and most recently Kendall Jenner jumping on the #BottleCapChallenge bandwagon, it's fun to see how everybody's putting a spin on the viral trend.

Here’s a breakdown of what exactly the challenge is - as well as which celebs have chosen to feud with a coca cola bottle.

What is the Bottle Cap Challenge?

The Bottle Cap Challenge is the latest craze sweeping the Internet and one that requires plenty of physical skill, unlike the 10 year challenge (unless you count not ageing for a decade as a physical skill.)

The challenge consists of roundhouse kicking the cap off a screw top bottle without knocking the bottle over, then posting slow-motion video evidence of it to social media under the hashtag #bottlecapchallenge.

The challenge exploded into popularity after MMA athletes and A-listers including John Mayer began giving it a go.

Of course, there are always a few comedic takes on the challenge and some users have started to post parodies of the challenge like the one above.

Who started the Bottle Cap Challenge?

The Bottle Cap Challenge began when an Instagram user named @farakicks posted a video to social media. @farakicks, who claims to be a European taekwondo champion in his Instagram profile, posted a video of himself demonstrating the challenge - jump kicking and roundhouse kicking the cap off the bottle.

He tagged actor and former professional athlete Jason Statham, as well as MMA professionals Conor McGregor, Jon Bones and Max Holloway - challenging them to take on the task. Designer Errolson Hugh was the first to give the task a name with the hashtag #bottlecapchallenge.

Hugh explained in the comments that he “saw @farakicks do it and tried it out [himself]. Came back 2 hours later and it had exploded”.

Which celebrities have done the Bottle Cap Challenge?

John Mayer

Revealing he had been challenged by UFC champion Max Holloway, Mayer's Bottle Cap Challenge video remains one of the most impressive as he manages to kick the cap off, and make it fly away.

Other celebrities were quick to comment on his video. Shawn Mendes said he “actually can’t believe this wow”, while musician Questlove said he was “dying and borderline impressed”. Holloway also said that Mayer had “nailed it”.

Comedian David Spade replied, “Can I do the one where you drink it” (same).

Jason Statham

Statham was one of the first to be tagged in the Bottle Cap Challenge by initial user @farakicks, but he was also challenged by musician John Mayer and Errolson Hugh. In a slow-motion video, Statham roundhouse kicked the cap off a glass bottle.

Mayer wrote in the comments, “You: tall Keanu Me: short Keanu”

Ludacris also wrote, “And the winner is…”

Statham's video appears to be the most popular, with over 10.8 million views and counting.

Statham then tagged director Guy Ritchie and personal trainer James Moontasri, with the latter rising to the challenge to kick the cap off while clutching a Dachsund puppy. Moontasri claimed it took “5 takes and a broken bottle of olive oil” to finally nail it.

Kendall Jenner

After being tagged by her close friend Hailey Bieber, the model decided to put her own A-list spin on the bottle cap challenge. In her slow-motion video, Jenner sped towards a glass bottle on a jet ski wearing a bikini. As she approached the bottle cap, she held her leg up and swept the cap clean off.

Her sisters immediately all went wild in the comments, with Kylie Jenner writing “Omg”, Kim writing “This is so good!!!” and Kourtney Kardashian writing, “I’m crying”.

Justin Bieber

The pop singer used his viral video to throw down the gauntlet (yet again) - calling out actor Tom Cruise. Bieber has previously challenged the Top Gun actor to a public UFC fight, tweeting out that he wanted to “challenge Tom Cruise to fight in the octagon”. (Cruise has yet to respond.)

Bieber also demonstrated his fighting skills, roundhouse kicking the bottle cap clean off. He also nominated his wife Hailey to do the challenge next.

Hailey Bieber

Model Hailey Bieber took on her husband’s challenge, but added her own twist. In the video, she drives into frame on an ATV with her leg already outstretched - kicking the bottle cap clean off without even looking.

Ryan Reynolds

As with Conor McGregor, Ryan Reynolds chose to use the bottle cap challenge as an opportunity to promote his alcohol brand: Aviation Gin. However his was infinitely more surreal and involved a bottle of Aviation travelling miles to be reunited with Reynolds - only to meet an untimely end.

Donnie Yen

As one of the greatest martial artists living today, there was no doubt that Donnie Yen’s take on the challenge would be nothing short of masterful. The actor, who became famous for playing the role of Bruce Lee’s real life master Ip Man, took things a step further and blindfolded himself. WIthout a second of hesitation, he unflinchingly kicked the cap clean off the top.

Mariah Carey

Who needs a roundhouse kick when you have one of the most powerful voices in the world? Carey put her very own spin on the Bottle Cap Challenge with this inspired technique:

David Spade

Even though David Spade may have joked to John Mayer about the challenge, he eventually gave it a go on his Twitter. In the video, Spade actually nails it and looks like he can't quite believe it either as he freaks out afterwards.

Spade tweeted, "Take that Bruce Lee."

He also tagged Chris Rock and Tom Brady, who have yet to do the challenge.

Diplo

After absolutely nobody asked Diplo to do the #BottleCapChallenge, the music producer decided to do it anyway. While hanging out in Ibiza, Diplo captioned his video, "Since no one requested me to do this (@johnmayer ) and also since no one thinks I'm good at anything except pushing button on stage .. here is evidence that I also do karate."

Diplo then challenged Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Kevin Durant and Barack Obama to do the challenge next.

Conor McGregor

McGregor saw the Bottle Cap Challenge as an opportunity to not only jump on a viral trend, but also promote his whiskey brand Proper Whiskey.

In the video, McGregor holds a bottle of his whiskey in one hand as he roundhouse kicks the lid off a bottle of water. Afterwards, he promptly uncorks his whiskey and takes a celebratory mouthful.

Never one to shy away from controversy, McGregor decided to nominate his infamous rival Floyd Mayweather.

Max Holloway

UFC Champion Holloway was one of the earliest people to jump on the Bottle Cap bandwagon and his was one of the most mesmerising. As he kicked the bottle, the cap span continuously without ever flying off - Holloway celebrated with a scream.

He also nominated John Mayer and said that he and fellow challenger Errolson Hugh “decided [Mayer would] have to come to Hawaii after your tour and kick it with us until you complete it”. (Mayer swiftly completed the challenge.)

Jon Jones

MMA athlete Jon ‘Bones’ Jones also took part in the challenge in what appears to be his living room. In the slow motion video he deliberately faked out a roundhouse kick - then calmly unscrewed the bottle cap with his hand. That's one way to do it.
