Bold cut-outs, bedazzling sparkles, and billowing tulle were the themes of this year’s adventurous looks

The Emmys are a time for the small screen to shine. For the award’s 74th ceremony, we finally saw a return to the 7,100-seat Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles after two years of Covid-enforced disruption, and with that a return to full-frontal red-carpet fashion.

The event isn’t typically as formal as the Oscars, meaning more adventurous looks are served. At yesterday’s affair, A-listers experimented with 2022’s biggest trend: cut-out clothing.

Yellowjackets actress Jasmin Savoy Brown stunned in a sexy Christopher Kane latex dress cut out at the hips and bust, complete with a gathered skirt suspended on gold snake chains. Ozark star Julia Garner, meanwhile, accepted her Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in a jaw-dropping Gucci dress embellished with florals and a diamond-shaped cutout revealing her belly button. Also flexing skin was Issa Rae, who sported a custom Sergio Hudson gown with a coy torso cutout.

Sequins were on the agenda, with a cohort of celebs rocking shimmering gowns. Most notably, Squid Game star Jung Ho-Yeon stole the show in a dazzling multi-colour, geometric Louis Vuitton dress. Complete with a clean bob and sweeping side fringe, the South Korean actress is fast providing her fashion IT-girl credentials. There was also Lily James’s slinky Versace chainmail dress, and Christina Ricci’s bedazzled Fendi Couture slip gown, both with a more understated sparkle for their form-fitting ruched dresses.

Tulle also made a big appearance on the carpet, with singer Lizzo winning the Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program for her show Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, dressed in red custom Giambattista Valli that had billowing tulle sleeves and a long train. While Kaley Cuoco looked angelic in a pink tulle gown complete with a train and floral appliques.

Of course, no best-dressed list is complete without Zendaya, who made history once again as the youngest ever two-time Emmy award winner. The Euphoria star embraced Old Hollywood with a custom black strapless Valentino gown that garnered 1.3 million likes in less than an hour on Instagram. She paired the simple yet elegant look, which was styled by Law Roach, with Bulgari diamonds and a large bow in her half-up, half-down hairdo.
