Review: ColourNation

Louise Scodie zones out for her treatment at this Oxford Street salon and gets a Mel C-inspired hairstyle
Treat your tresses: Colour Nation, W1

What’s the buzz? Tucked away behind the madness of Oxford Street, this is a surprisingly large, spacious and unpretentious salon where I happily zoned out for an hour. ColourNation are great at customer service. Yes, I do want to be offered a hot drinkie when I arrive at the salon, and yes, I do want to be offered another one when I’ve finished it.

Drinkies apart, ColourNation, as the name suggests, prides itself on its colouring services and semi-permanent conditioning treatments. My hairdresser Christina didn’t push a treatment on me though – in fact, she said that a smoothing treatment would be too much for my hair, and diagnosed a mix of two rinse-off masks for my hair instead.

This salon uses Wella products, and a mix of volumising and moisturising products were applied to my hair throughout. I sat in a large chair under a heat lamp whilst the mask worked for 15 minutes – I asked for the heat to be removed halfway through the treatment as I was uncomfortably boiling, but the mask worked anyway. I’m typing this with day two hair and my hair is still soft and shiny. The blow-dry itself was what exactly I wanted – sleek with a centre parting, based on a picture of Mel C I’d spotted (a recent picture obvs – I didn’t ask for her 90s shellsuit ponytail).

At first my hair looked really flyaway – on pointing this out to Christina she patiently went over and over my hair to reduce said annoying wispiness and wouldn’t stop until I was happy. There’s that customer focus again. The result? Nice smooth hair in just the shape I wanted it and perfect for that evening’s date night. Hurrah!
