These breathtaking images are just some of the nominees entered into the Royal Photographic Society’s International Images for Science competition.

The annual competition awards images that cover all breadth of science, from medicine and forensic science to zoology and astronomy.

Among the highlights of this year’s shortlisted entrants is Anup Deohar’s 'Warrior of the Grassland' which shows a male fan-throated lizard holding a blade of grass as though it was a spear.

Also highly commended comes Pedro Jarque’s photograph of a family of western lowland gorillas.

But you may want to pause from eating before looking at Stefan Diller's entry - a magnified photo of the roundworm commonly found in dogs.

More than 2,500 entries were submitted from both amateur and professional photographers, and the five category winners will be announced next Tuesday September 20.

The winners and 95 other shortlisted entries will be showcased during a five week exhibition at The Crystal in East London from Wednesday September 14.
