Youth in court on terror charge

Evening Standard13 April 2012

A 17-year-old was remanded in custody by a court today after being accused of plotting to cause an explosion.

The teenager, who was arrested in a series of anti-terrorist raids by police last week, appeared at Bow Street Magistrates' Court in central London.

The charge was put to him that: "Between October 1 2003 and March 31 2004, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court you unlawfully and maliciously conspired with others to cause, by an explosive substance, an explosion of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property".

The charge was made under Section 3 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883.
Asked whether he understood, the teenager, who was unshaven and dressed in a black sweatshirt and black jogging trousers, replied: "Yes."
