A woman police officer who was shot and seriously injured in a bungled raid on a travel agent's which led to the death of her colleague fought back tears today as she described being gunned down.

Teresa Milburn said she felt "immense pain" after being shot at close range by an Asian man.

Asked by Robert Smith QC at Newcastle Crown Court what she felt when she heard a bang, she replied: "Immense pain."

He then asked her if she realised what had happened to her.

"I did. I realised I had been shot."

The officer, who had to wipe away tears and took deep breaths, said the force of the blast "spun her round".

Pc Milburn told the court: "I was lying on the floor. I was coughing up blood. I could feel blood running down my nose and blood over my face, and I was gasping for breath."

She said she remained conscious throughout the ordeal and told the jury that as soon as other officers arrived she asked them to take down her description of the man who shot her colleague Pc Sharon Beshenivsky and herself.

Earlier, Pc Milburn, 37, of Birstall, Batley, told the court she was "a stride" behind Pc Beshenivsky as they walked from their patrol car to the Universal Express travel agents.

She said she heard a noise which seemed to be coming from the travel agents.

After taking a sip of water, Pc Milburn, who gave evidence in her police uniform, said: "She (Pc Beshenivsky) had walked in front of me and I went immediately after that, and then she stopped, stopped dead.

"She stopped that quickly I overstepped her, behind her."

Pc Beshenivsky, 38, was shot and killed in the incident at the Universal Express travel agents in Morley Street, Bradford, on November 18 last year.

Yusuf Abdillh Jamma, 20, of Whitmore Road, Small Heath, Birmingham; Raza Ul-Haq Aslam, 25, of St Pancras Way, Kentish Town, north London; Faisal Razzaq, 25, and his 26-year-old brother Hassan, both of Sebert Road, Forest Gate, east London, all deny her murder.

Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 25, of no fixed address, has pleaded guilty to her murder, but he denies firing the shot that killed her. He also denies the attempted murder of Pc Milburn.
