Woman injured in crash with runaway horses

12 April 2012

A woman was seriously injured this morning as a campervan crashed into runaway horses.

The VW campervan, in which five people were travelling, hit five horses loose on the A26 north of Lewes, East Sussex, at 1.20am.

The 40-year-old woman had to be cut free from the van by firefighters and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, with the 48-year-old male driver and a 44-year-old male passenger.

Two children escaped uninjured but were taken to the hospital to be checked. All are expected to make a full recovery, a Sussex Police spokesman said.

A vet was called to the scene where one of the horses had to be put down and two were treated for injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or for anyone who saw the horses in the area to contact them on 0845 60 70 999, quoting Operation Dexam.
