Why UK is best country in the world, by ballet star Carlos Acosta

London's multiculturalism makes it the best city in the world for artists, Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta said today.

Acosta, who opens his new contemporary dance show, Premieres Plus, at the Coliseum next week with French ballerina Zenaida Yanowsky, 35, said Britain's "strongest card" is that it "embraces all forms of culture and people from everywhere".

He could never have enjoyed such huge success in a country which concentrated on its own national talent, added Acosta, 38, who lives in Islington. "The thing I admire most about this country is if you're talented you will be rewarded.

"It is the thing about England that makes it different - that foreigners have played a really large part in its history. It is extremely diverse and cosmopolitan and for me it's the best country in the world."

However, the generous welcome extended to international dancers did not damage Britain's own dance tradition, he insisted.

Contracted to the Royal Ballet until next year, he hopes to work in Cuba eventually but will maintain a UK base "for my own spirit, to see good art all the time".

Carlos Acosta Premieres Plus is at the London Coliseum from July 27-30. Visit eno.org
