Warning over petrol prices

13 April 2012

Petrol prices are expected to soar to an average of 82p a litre nationwide following a record-high in the cost of crude oil, the RAC warned today.

The price of a barrel of crude in New York reached an all-time high of 51.48 dollars (£30.28) today.

The RAC said this was likely to mean a litre of standard unleaded petrol rising to around 82p in the UK - 5p more than at this time last year.

RAC spokeswoman Susie Haywood said: "Despite the Government's welcome freeze on the 2p annual increase in fuel duty, originally planned for September 1, drivers are facing more price rises at British petrol pumps in the near future.

"RAC Insure's latest cost of motoring index shows that many drivers are already paying over £1,000 a year in fuel costs, so an extra 5p a litre could push annual household fuel costs up substantially."

She added: "For motorists, the obvious tip is to make sure they shop around for the lowest possible price.

"Drivers should also make sure they squeeze every last mile out of their fuel tank by putting a few simple fuel economy tips into action.

"Don't drive madly off at the lights or slam on your brakes as you approach lights, an intersection or a roundabout - slow and gentle acceleration and braking will make your petrol go further.

"If you don't have to use it, take your roof or bike rack off as this will minimise drag and reduce the extra amount of petrol needed. Keeping a constant speed and trying to stay in a high gear will also reduce the fuel consumption of your vehicle - and keep that extra cash in your pocket."
