Closer: but Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton will keep their own bedrooms

They live separately but together in adjoining houses in Belsize Park. Now Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter are taking a step towards co-habitation with a new link between the two former artists' studios.

The couple are planning a major refurbishment which will see the properties linked by a "quirky" new first-floor walkway. It involves creating a new two-storey extension and is due to be approved by Camden council.

Bonham Carter, 45, and Burton, 53, who have two children Billy, seven, and Nell, three, will continue to use separate bedrooms. The actress revealed recently: "Our relationship is enhanced by knowing we have our personal space to retreat to."

She also admitted to a more down to earth reason for wanting to retain her privacy. "Tim does snore, and that's an element," she said. "We've tried lots of remedies that don't work. He has a deviated septum and doesn't want an operation."
