US drone missile strike in Pakistan kills 14

12 April 2012

The US has fired missiles into a Taliban haven in Pakistan, killing 14 alleged insurgents.

The 18 missiles, fired at North Waziristan from drones, struck cars, homes and tents in the Doga area, where militants train.

It is the third such strike since Pakistani-American Faisal Shazad was arrested after an alleged failed car-bombing in Times Square on May 1. He is said to have told US investigators that he trained in Waziristan.

American claims that the Taliban were behind the attack may add pressure on Pakistan's government to launch an army attack on the militant sanctuaries of the region, but few expect its stretched army to rush into any operation. The army has not moved into North Waziristan partly because insurgent commanders have generally not attacked targets in Pakistan.

The US has launched 30 attacks on North Waziristan this year after militants fled from their previous haven of South Waziristan.
