US budget deficit at $521bn

THE White House is expected next week to project that the US budget deficit will peak this year at $521bn (£286.72bn), shattering previous records.

The figure would easily top the record $374bn shortfall posted in fiscal 2003 and, at 5% of gross domestic product, would be the worst figure on those terms since 1993.
