UK economy still outstrips Europe

THE British economy is still outperforming its European counterparts and grew 0.6% in the third quarter from the previous three months, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said today.

The figures are the first estimate of overall economic activity for the period, and follow last week's official data showing upwardly revised 0.6% growth in the second quarter.

However data today showed manufacturing output suffered a surprise slump in August. Blaming a sharp fall in car and machinery production, the Office for National Statistics said factory output dived by 0.6% in August to stand 0.8% lower than a year ago.
