12 April 2012

At least two people were shot as men on two motorbikes exchanged gunfire with others in a car as they sped through the East End.

The chase took place after men on one motorbike opened fire on a silver Audi A3 in Devons Road, Bow, at about midnight on Friday.

A short distance later the Audi collided with one of the motorcycles in St Paul's Way but the chase continued along Rhodeswell Road and into Copperfield Road, Stepney, where the Audi crashed into the second bike.

The 32-year-old car driver was arrested at the scene. A second 32-year-old, who was the passenger in the car, was found nearby suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

He was arrested after being discharged from hospital. Scotland Yard said today both men had been bailed pending inquiries.

A 22-year-old man who was on the motorbike that crashed with the car in Copperfield Road was found nearby with gunshot wounds and crash injuries.

He was under arrest in hospital where he was in a serious condition.

Three other men who were on the bikes are being hunted in a major police operation.
