The scene is straight out of Hollywood, but in fact this is a tree-lined avenue in west London, just after 3pm on a sunny weekday.

Moments earlier, a car pulled up and delivered a volley of shots at three men in another vehicle. Within seconds the attackers had sped off, leaving the three victims injured - one of them seriously.

One man who saw the shooting told how he drove one of the victims to a police station in his car.

Alain Dupuis was loading his vehicle in Oxford Gardens, Notting Hill, when he saw the car pull up and the shots fired. Within seconds, one of the blood-soaked victims was running towards him and begging to be taken to hospital.

"The guy leapt up the road like his life depended on it," Mr Dupuis said. "It looked like he had been shot near his groin and in his arm."

The 67-year-old bundled the injured man into his boot and started driving towards St Mary's hospital in Paddington. On the way, he called for an ambulance on his mobile phone but was told to go to the nearest police station.

"I was driving very slowly with this man half naked and bleeding in the back towards Notting Hill police station," he said. "Luckily there were two plain-clothed officers in the street who saw us and offered to help.

"At first I thought it must have been a TV commercial being filmed," he said. "I saw the shots being fired and within seconds a car had sped off and a guy who had been shot was running towards me.

"He said, 'Come on man, drive me to hospital.' I put down a blanket and he sat in the boot with his legs dangling out the back. Blood was coming out of him like a stuck pig. I just did what any decent person would do."

Mr Dupuis told police that both cars involved in the shooting were black, four-door saloons. The man he rescued was due to give a full statement to police today.

The attack is being investigated by Operation Trident which investigates black-on-black crime. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Two men and possibly a third were injured."

Two were taken to hospital, where one is said to be in a serious condition.
