Two guilty of Adlington ticket scam

12 April 2012

Two people were today convicted over a scam in which the parents of Olympic champion swimmer Rebecca Adlington bought tickets to see her compete in Beijing which never arrived.

Jurors at Southwark crown court found Alan Scott, 56, from Chigwell, Essex, guilty of two counts of fraudulent trading of the tickets and Terence Shepherd, 52, from Blackheath, of one count of money laundering.

Kay Adlington paid more than £1,000 for tickets but was told two weeks before the games that the supplier had gone bust. "I was absolutely devastated," she told a previous hearing.

Shepherd denies two remaining counts of fraudulent trading and his wife Margaret Canty-Shepherd, 51, faces a charge of money laundering. Cyril Gold, from Harrow Weald, is charged with aiding and abetting fraudulent trading. Allan Schaverien, 67, has admitted aiding and abetting fraudulent trading. Prosecutors claimed a number of companies including Xclusive Leisure and Hospitality and Peter's Tickets were involved in the scam.

The jury is continuing its deliberations relating to six further charges.
