TV gardener plants the idea that Chelsea's had its heyday

'Too corporate': Carol Klein laments
12 April 2012

TV gardener Carol Klein has lamented the "corporate influence" over the Chelsea Flower Show and asked whether the world-famous horticultural event has "had its heyday".

The Gardeners' World presenter said the summer show was still "the best of the best" but added that the annual fixture was less about plants than it used to be.

Asked whether she came away from Chelsea feeling inspired, she told TV Times: "Yes, but when I exhibited, I hoped to give people a lot of inspiration, too.

"I love the bits that touch ordinary people and relate to what's attainable and what's relevant to folk."

She said: "I don't know whether Chelsea's had its heyday. There's a big corporate influence now over the whole thing, but it used to be much more about plants.

"And those are the parts of it that I really relish, and I think those are the parts of it that people go for."
