Tuition fee campaigners target campus open days

12 April 2012

Students are to demonstrate at university open days in the next stage of their protests against plans to triple tuition fees, campaign groups announced today.

They will descend on campuses around the country as sixth formers and their parents visit to decide which university to apply for.

Mark Bergfeld of the Education Activist Network said: "Universities will be announcing how much they will charge in fees in the coming weeks. We are planning to target open days and occupy buildings. We will hold good-natured demos on campuses."

Mr Bergfeld called on everybody affected by government cuts to join students in their march to Parliament on Saturday. He said: "What we are saying now is we need the support of all people who are under attack, whether they are pensioners, trade unionists or the unemployed."

Jody McIntyre, who said he was pulled out of his wheelchair by police at a demonstration last month, said he will join Saturday's protest, adding: "This is only the beginning of the struggle."
