Tube staff to decide on Christmas strike

Tube staff are deciding whether to strike over Christmas
12 April 2012

Thousands of Tube staff will decide today whether to take strike action over the Christmas period in a long-running row over pay.

A ballot of more than 6,000 members of the RMT union, including drivers, signallers and engineers, is expected to endorse the strike call.

By law the union must give seven days' notice of any action, meaning the first stoppages could take place from the 28 December Bank Holiday.

RMT leader Bob Crow said the ballot took place with a "strong recommendation for a massive Yes vote".

London Underground said it has made its "final offer" of 1.5 per cent this year and RPI plus 0.5 per cent next year, which the RMT has rejected as "derisory".

The union has already ordered Christmas walkouts by EDF Energy Powerlink staff who maintain the network's power supply.
