Tube chiefs in court bid to halt Boxing Day strike

London Underground bosses were seeking a court injunction today in a bid to prevent the Boxing Day strike.

The Aslef union is demanding three days' pay and a day off in lieu for drivers working on Sunday, but Tube bosses say they already receive adequately enhanced pay under a long-standing agreement. Aslef controls most of the 3,200 drivers.

More than half are due to walk out in a 24-hour strike which will inconvenience tens of thousands of shoppers on one of the busiest trading days of the year, together with football fans trying to get to the Fulham v West Ham game.

West End and other major London retailers fear losing tens of millions of pounds. Driver members of the rival RMT union could refuse to cross Aslef picket lines, adding to the disruption.

Today Transport for London said attempts to resolve the "potentially disruptive and completely unnecessary" walkout through negotiation had failed. Aslef today rejected a last-ditch demand from TfL to call off the strike.
