Tube chaos as breakdown and signal failure hit Jubilee line

Dick Murray12 April 2012

Tens of thousands of Jubilee line passengers suffered yet more disruption today after trains broke down at Dollis Hill and Southwark.

The line, used by more than 600,000 passengers a day, was then suspended between Green Park and London Bridge after a passenger was taken ill on a train at Canary Wharf. A signal failure at Waterloo added to the delays.

Passengers have been repeatedly delayed because trains are failing to connect to the line's new signalling system. Designed for improved and faster service, it allows trains to "talk" to one another via the in-cab computers. However, trains have been stranded when the system fails and has to be rebooted.

Transport for London apologised, saying: "London Underground is working flat out to improve reliability and is engaged in a massive upgrade programme to replace track, signals and trains to provide more capacity and smoother journeys for our customers."

TfL also announced that the Tube will run for an hour longer during the Olympics - but there will not be a 24-hour service. The schedule to cope with 20 million extra journeys was outlined as the authority opened pay talks covering next year with unions.

The last trains will leave the Olympic Park at about 1am daily, and central London at 2am. The service will wind down by 2.30am - an hour later than usual. A round-the-clock service remains possible only after the opening ceremony, which may finish as late as midnight.
