Trumpeter on the Classical Brit shortlist

Contender: 31-year-old Alison Balsom

trumpeter Alison Balsom will contend with two of opera's divas at this year's Classical Brits.

Balsom, 31, named young British classical performer of the year only three years ago, is in the running for best female artist against Anna Netrebko and Danielle de Niese. It is a rare victory for an instrument in a category that has been dominated by singers.

Balsom is the only woman classical trumpeter with a recording deal with a big label.

Russian soprano Netrebko, 37, wowed audiences at the Last Night of the Proms two years ago. Australian-born fellow soprano de Niese, 29, is engaged to Gus Christie, executive chairman of Glyndebourne. The full nominations will be unveiled tonight at the Mayfair Hotel. The winners will be announced at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 May.
