Travelodge, Little Chef up for sale

2 November 2018

COMPASS Group, the world's biggest catering firm, is to unload its Travelodge hotels and Little Chef roadside restaurants to focus on its contract foodservice operations. The company said the businesses would be sold in separate auctions conducted by Schroder Salomon Smith Barney.

Compass inherited Travelodge and Little Chef following its demerger from Granada. The pair generated turnover of about £300m and operating profits of around £100m last year. Travelodge is the country's second largest budget hotel company with around 12,000 rooms in 220 roadside and urban locations. Little Chef has 397 outlets and serves more than 30m people every year.

Compass has developed a strong contract catering business, with clients including the BBC, Boeing, IBM, Philips and American Express. It also feeds MEPs and civil servants at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and staff working around the world for energy firm ChevronTexaco.
