Trader: I dream of another recession so I can make money

12 April 2012

A City trader has caused outrage after admitting in a television interview that his colleagues "don't really care that much" about the prospect of an economic collapse.

Alessio Rastani declared the "market is toast" and outlined his hopes for another global recession, adding: "Governments don't rule the world - Goldman Sachs rules the world." Speaking about plunging stock markets, he also claimed he had been "dreaming of this moment for three years".

"Alessio Rastani" was the sixth most popular subject on Twitter in London this afternoon. One user called EtonOldBoys retweeted the clip, adding: "You simply have to watch this, these are the people that live off bailouts and crashes ... this is scary. This guy is a City Spiv, these people can break economies and cause banks to fail."

After Mr Rastani, who is not employed by a bank or fund manager, had described the market as "toast" in the BBC News interview yesterday, presenter Martine Croxall asked for a solution.

He replied: "For most traders, we don't really care that much how they're going to fix the economy, how they're going to fix the whole situation. Our job is to make money from it."

He added: "I have a confession - I go to bed every night and I dream of another recession, I dream of another moment like this."

The BBC was facing questions over why it interviewed Mr Rastani. Traders said they had not heard of him.
